Eilenberg Theorems for Free

چکیده
Eilenberg-type correspondences, relating varieties of languages (e.g. of finite words, infinite words, or trees) to pseudovarieties of finite algebras, form the backbone of algebraic language theory. Numerous such correspondences are known in the literature. We demonstrate that they all arise from the same recipe: one models languages and the algebras recognizing them by monads on an algebraic category, and applies a Stone-type duality. Our main contribution is a variety theorem that covers e.g. Wilke’s and Pin’s work on∞-languages, the variety theorem for cost functions of Daviaud, Kuperberg, and Pin, and unifies the two previous categorical approaches of Bojańczyk and of Adámek et al. In addition we derive a number of new results, including an extension of the local variety theorem of Gehrke, Grigorieff, and Pin from finite to infinite words. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.4.3 Formal Languages

Algebraic cohomology: the early days
This paper will survey the various definitions of homology theories from the first Eilenberg-Mac Lane theories for group cohomology through the Cartan-Eilenberg attempt at a uniform (co-)homology theory in algebra, cotriple cohomology theories and the various acyclic models theorems that tied them all together (as much as was possible).
متن کاملAn Eilenberg–like Theorem for Algebras on a Monad
An Eilenberg–like theorem is shown for algebras on a given monad. The main idea is to explore the approach given by Bojańczyk that defines, for a given monad T on a category D, pseudovarieties of T–algebras as classes of finite T–algebras closed under homomorphic images, subalgebras, and finite products. To define pseudovarieties of recognizable languages, which is the other main concept for an...
متن کاملCommutants of von Neumann Correspondences and Duality of Eilenberg-Watts Theorems by Rieffel and by Blecher
The category of von Neumann correspondences from B to C (or von Neumann B–C–modules) is dual to the category of von Neumann correspondences from C to B via a functor that generalizes naturally the functor that sends a von Neumann algebra to its commutant and back. We show that under this duality, called commutant, Rieffel’s Eilenberg-Watts theorem (on functors between the categories of represen...
متن کاملEilenberg theorems for many-sorted formations
A theorem of Eilenberg establishes that there exists a bi-jection between the set of all varieties of regular languages and the set of all varieties of finite monoids. In this article after defining, for a fixed set of sorts S and a fixed S-sorted signature Σ, the concepts of formation of congruences with respect to Σ and of formation of Σ-algebras, we prove that the algebraic lattices of all Σ...
متن کاملSKEW - MONOIDAL REFLECTION AND LIFTING THEOREMS In memory of Brian Day STEPHEN LACK AND ROSS STREET
This paper extends the Day Re ection Theorem to skew monoidal categories. We also provide conditions under which a skew monoidal structure can be lifted to the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras for a comonad.
